Diagnosing Hemorrhoids:

Diagnosis begins at home with noticing any inconsistencies or symptoms associated with hemorrhoids, and ends with a comprehensive, medical evaluation. During a physical assessment for hemorrhoids, physicians examine the anal area to receive a definitive diagnosis. This process usually begins with the removal of your clothing from the waste down.

It is likely that you'll be asked to lye on an examination table for the preliminary examination, so that the practitioner may look for any evidence relating to any one of the classifications of hemorrhoids. A rectal exam can also be performed. Further examination entails the use of an anoscope. It is usually the last option and is only used if all other treatment options have failed. It can be done on either an inpatient or outpatient setting, and requires anesthesia.
